History
Big Lots Inc., was founded in 1967 by Sol Shenk in Ohio with the name of Consolidated Stores Corporation. In 1982, the company opened first closeout store in Columbus, Ohio called Odd Lots. After some years, Consolidated started opening their stores under the Big Lots name and thus all Odd Lots stores were rebranded as Big Lots. Consolidated Stores Corp., began trading on the American Stock exchange in 1986. After a year, the company switched to New York Stock Exchange, under the symbol CNS.
Business Expansion
In 1994, Toy Liquidators having 82 stores in 38 states brought by Consolidated Stores Corp., whereas after two years, company purchases another toy company named KB Toys from Melville Corporation to expand further themselves into toy business. Consolidates Stores Corp., ly changed their name to Big Lots Inc., in 2001.
Big Lots Wholesale
Big lots had permanent showrooms in Columbus, New York, Boston and Chicago areas where they provided merchandise in bulk for resale from many different categories of products. Big Lots also attended trade to increase their business.
