What is Singapore Badminton Hall?
Singapore badminton hall was constructed in 1952. It was built for the Thomas Cup Tournament. First tournament was in between United Kingdom & Malayan in 1949 in which Malayan team won the championship. In that time there was not any suitable indoor sports hall. S., the Singapore government decided to build the sports hall for tournaments. For this a plot was required. To fulfill this requirement they started to collect the funds and donation. The total cost for the construction was S$800,000. But they were able to collect only S$450,000. Finally, AW Boon How gave loan. It was completed in 1952. In 1978 On Singapore Sports Council took over its management. It was officially opened on 7th June, 1952 with the hands the Governor of Singapore Sin John Fearns Nicoll.
After opening, the tournaments started. In 1955, first time 3rd Thomas Cup was held there in which Indonesian team won.
On 7th December, it was the venue of Radio Singapore’s all variety show. The erected wall was totally collapsed in this show. The hall was renovated & reserved for the badminton tournament for the Southeast Asian Games.
It is known for two historical events – TWO Thomac Cup Tournament.
