JCPenney was opened in 1902 by James Cash Penney after entering into partnership with Callhan and Johnson. By 1907, Mr Penny had opened two another stores, meanwhile, Callhan and Johnson withdrew from partnership. From the period between 1909 and 1912, a headquarters was relocated to Utah followed by the opening of 34 stores. In 1913, the company was renamed as J.C. Penney Company and New York was selected as the new location for its headquarters. The company had a presence in 22 states of the USA with over 170 stores by 1917. J. C. Penney Company had its first subsidiary as The Crescent Corset Company in 1920 and in 1922 it launched its brand, Big Mac work clothes. In the backdrop of great depression, the company opened its 1000th store and had the business of $190,000,000. JC Penney introduced its credit cards in 1950's.
In between 1960's and 70's, JC Penney saw growth in its business and added home equipments, garden tools, salons, photo studio, automotive parts etc in its product range. By 1973, The number of its stores was increased to 2,053. Visa Card and MasterCard were started to be accepted at the JCP stores.
JCPenney switched to electronic method of selling through Viewtron videotex in 1984. It also launched its JCPenney TV Shopping Channel in 1989. Meanwhile, the company stopped the selling of firearms. In 1990, its headquarters was relocated to Plano, Texas and by 1993, JCP was the leader in the catalogue business. The company stepped in the e commerce through the launching of its in 1998 which touched the Revenue of on billion dollar in 2005. The company purchased various drug stores like Kerr Drug , Thrift, and Fay's Drug in 1997.
