The journey of the Bharat Petroleum started as Burmah Oil Company, an old prominent petroleum company in South Asia oil market that was founded in Scotland in 1886. Later on, in 1928, Asiatic Petroleum Company made partnership with Burma oil Company and gave birth to Burmah
Shell Oil Storage Company. Finally, on 24th of January 1976, Government of India took possession over the company to make it Bharat Refineries Limited that later came to be known as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. In the early years of foundation, the corporation's operations were limited to marketing and importing of kerosene that gradually expanded to other products like petroleum, natural gas and petrochemicals.

BPCL has parted its operation into two major segments: petroleum oil and gas. Under the petroleum oil segment, its major work is to refine and make proper distribution of petroleum products such as fuel oil, base oil, naphtha, etc. Bharat Petroleum oil segment is also engaged in the examination and production of hydrocarbons. Other segment is gas; the corporation distributes and markets LPG gas. It also does the bottling of LPG cylinders. Bharat Gas has about 49 modern filling plants that bottle empty Bharat gas cylinders. Moreover' the company also retails few petrochemical products such as lubricants, bitumen, sulphur, black oils, while oils, cutting gas, etc. The corporation has been running through refineries that are Mumbai Refinery, Kochi Refineries, Bina Refinery and Numaligarh Refinery. According to survey conducted in 2012, BPCL has strength of approximately 14,154 employees.
