The history of Audi AG started by August Horch in 1899. During the 1932, Audi merged to make Auto Union AG with Horch, DKW and Wanderer on June 29, 1932 in Chemnitz, Germany. After this merger in 1933, Audi introduced the Audi Front UW 220 car in Europe. It was the Europe's first car to combine front-wheel drive with a six-cylinder engine. In the beginning, the company started selling a wide range of passenger vehicles like motorcycles and luxury saloon cars. In 1964, Volkswagen bought 50% business of Audi. Audi AG has been operating as a 99.55% subsidiary of Volkswagen Group since 1966. Volkswagen Group reintroduced Audi brand with the Audi F103 series.
The name of company has been taken from the surname of the founder, August Horch. In germany language, "Horch" meaning is "listen", which becomes "audi" in Latin language.
