History
Rona Inc. was founded in Boucherville, Quebec in 1939 under the name The Merchants of Hardware whereas in 1960, the company changed its name to Rona. Assets of Botanix was purchased by
Rona in 1982 and after two year in 1984, they create a purchasing alliance with
Home Hardware Stores Ltd., Ontario based company with the name of Rona Home Inc. whereas in 1990, Rona formed an alliance with Hardware Wholesalers, Inc. Ontario based Cashway Building Centres having sixty six centres was acquired by Rona Inc. in 2000 and in 2003, they acquire Reno-Depot Inc. from British Kingfisher plc. Between 2006 and 2010, Rona Inc. acquired many companies like Stephens Home Centre and Curtis Lumber Building Supplies both in 2006, Burnaby based Dick’s Lumber in 2007, Nova Scotia based Pierceys in 2010.

Rona Home & Garden stores ranges from 85,000 to 150,000 square feet and are built in a
Warehouse style. All the Rona stores are owned by the combination of Rona Inc. and franchises. In the province of Quebec, many Rona stores have local ownership whereas in the Rest of Canada, most of the stores are owned by the company. Rona closes six big boxes stores, one in British Columbia and five in Ontario in 2012.
