What is O2 Contact?
O2 or Telefónica UK Limited is the subsidiary of Telefónica Europe to provide telecommunications and financial services. It carries out its operations from headquarters located at Berkshire, UK with the strength of over 10,000 employees. Considered as one of the largest cellular phone service providers in the UK, it had the second largest customer base out of total 82.7 million Mobile phone consumers in the UK as of 2014. It offers its services for residential customers and businesses. Apart from several telcom plans, the company offers Mobile phone handsets, tablet, apps, Internet access and several loyalty programs to its subscribers. The company delivers services over the various mode of networks like GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, LTE, HSPA+ etc. Its financial services has been branded as O2 money, which is operated on NFC payment system.
The formation of O2 dates back to 1985 in the form of Cellnet, a division of British Telecom. It was the first cellular service offered by the company. Cellnet ownership was divided between British Telecommunications and Securicor with 60 percent stakes were owned by former. In 1999, the 40 percent of share of Securicor was purchased by BT, retaining its the full ownership of Cellnet. BT renamed Cellnet as BT Cellnet and made it the division of BT Wireless. Cellnet was credited to start the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) in the world on commercial level. It was the year 2001, when BT Wireless was demerged from its parent company, British Telecom and was renamed as mmO2 plc. mmO2 plc launched its services under “O2” brand before being renamed as O2 plc in 2002.
In 2005, the Three years old company, O2 was purchased by Telefónica, a telecom company based in Spain. O2 stepped in the financial services market by introducing O2 Money in 2009. In the same year, the company started its 4G services operated on LTE network. O2 is known for providing free Wi Fi access to the people and tourists in central London. In 2013, the company won the bid of 4G spectrum for 800 Mhz band.
Its sponsorship covers various arenas and venues including The O2 Arena, O2 ABC Glasgow, O2 Academy Birmingham, O2 Academy Oxford etc. On the other hand, O2 has been the sponsor of England Rugby Team since 2003.
