The bank started business operations in the year 1967. It was established for providing foreign exchange services. Owned initially by the government, the bank in 1989 became private. In January 1975, Korea Exchange Bank set up the securities business and after Three years, it started Credit Card service, which was the first of its kind in Korea. The bank was the official sponsor of Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 and Asian Games in 1986. In April of 1994, the shares of the bank were listed on the Korean Stock Exchange and in the following year, it established a foreign exchange research center. The bank in 1999 launched its official and started providing its services online.
After the Asian financial crisis, the operations of the bank were purchased by an American private equity firm Lone Star Funds in 2003. In December 2012, the bank established its presence in the United Arab Emirates by opening its office in Abu Dhabi. In September 2013, the Global Finance recognized the bank as the Best Foreign Exchange Bank. In December of the same year, the bank named Choi Dong-sug as the new Managing Director. Moreover, it has also been named as the Best Bank by AsiaMoney.
In April of 2014, the bank initiated a residential Mobile banking service which allows the customers to access the services with their technology devices. The bank's is also available in various regional languages. The corporate headquarter of the bank is situated in Seoul, South Korea.
