What is Karmapa?
The Karmapa is the head of the biggest sub school of the Kagyupa named Karma Kagyu. It is regarded among the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism and its historical seat is Tsurphu Monastery located in the Tolung Valley of Tibet. The regional monastic seats of the Karmapa are: Dhagpo Kagyu Ling in France, Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in New York and Tashi Choling in Bhutan. The Karmapas are the owners of the Black Crown Tibetan and are thus sometimes known as the Black Hat Lamas. This black crown is typically said to have been waived by the dakinis from their hair and given to Karmapa in identification of his religious realization.
