JC Penney was founded in 1902 at Kemmerer, Wyoming by James Cash Penney and his partners Callahan and Johnson. Within five years, the company was the owner of
Three stores and Callahan and Johnson quit their partnership from the company. JC Penney was expanded to more than 30 stores by 1912 after being relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1909. Its chain of outlets were labeled as JC Penney Company in 1913. Its first acquisition was Crescent Corset Company in 1920. Its corporate office was moved to New York City form Salt Lake City, Utah in 1917. Meanwhile, JC Penney had the network of over 170 stores operating in 22 states throughout the USA. In 1928, JC Penney was the owner of 1000 stores. In 1950s, the company introduced its credit cards in 1959. The decades of 60s and 70s marked the success of the company in terms of
Revenue and expansion. In 1987, the company shifted its headquarters in Dallas, Texas before being moved to Plano, Texas in 1990. JC Penney purchased various drug stores like Fay's Drug, Kerr Drug and Thrift and were labeled as Eckerd in 1997. The company withdrew many of its stores by 2014.
