The company is primarily engaged in the transmission, generation and distribution of electricity. The Empire District Electric Company was introduced in the year of 1909. It also operates a wholly owned subsidiary 'The Empire District Gas Company', which was created in 2006. The Empire District Electric Company is divided in
Three main business segments such as Gas, Electric and other. The Gas segment is engaged in providing natural gas services to approximately
48 communities and 377 transportation clients in the North Central and West Central Missouri as well as Northwest. It gives services to more than 44,000 customers in its service areas. The Gas segment is comprised in nearly 1,160 miles of distribution mains and approximately 87 miles of transmission mains. The Electric segment is engaged in distributing electricity. It generates electricity from natural gas, coal and
Hydro plants. Apart from this, The Electric segment also offers water service to three towns in Missouri. It serves more than 168,800 customers in residential, industrial, commercial and wholesale sectors as well as public authorities. The transmission system of this segment comprising nearly 22 miles of 345 KV lines, 441 miles of 161 KV lines, 745 miles of 69 KV lines and 81 miles of 34.5 KV lines and distribution system consisting of nearly 6,882 miles of lines.
