The university was formed in 1965 under the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965, made by Assam Legislative Assembly. Dibrugarh University is affiliated from University Grants Commission (UGC), National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The university covers seven districts jurisdiction areas which are located in both the bank of river Brahmaputra namely Dibrugarh, Upper Assam, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Sibsagar, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. Dibrugarh University is consists of 140 affiliated colleges which offers higher education studies in the field of Commerce, Arts, Engineering, Medical, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Science and Technology, Law, Management and Teachers Training, and Computer Sciences. Entire colleges are having 17 Teaching Departments and 14 Centres of Studies. Apart from this, it is also a member of Association of Indian Universities.
