Establishment
CNA was originally founded as Continental
Assurance Company of North
America in 1897 in Detroit. Later, it merged with the Metropolitan Accident Company and renamed in Continental Casualty Company and transferred operation to Chicago. In 1956, CNA bought The National Fire Insurance Company and later in 1963 it purchased the American Casualty Company. In 1967, the Continental National American Group or simply as CNA came into existence by the merger of National Fire Insurance Company and American Casualty Company. During 1968, the company acquired the Manhattan Fund from Gerald Tsai and paid 27 million dollar. In 1999,
Allstate purchased personal insurance division of CNA.
